New Technologies for Second Generation Search and Rescue

The satellite-based Cospas-Sarsat search and rescue system has assisted with the emergency rescue of more than 35,000 lives worldwide since introduction in 1982. A second generation of this system is currently under development, promising to significantly improve detection rate and localisation accuracy. However, in an emergency, the system’s performance is often compromised due to interference and atmospheric effects, leading to false detections that waste valuable resources. This project aims to provide novel techniques leading to faster, more reliable, more accurate, and more cost- effective search and rescue operations, ultimately saving lives.

The explosion of 'cloud' services, streaming video, 'big data', and a myriad of new applications, are opening up new opportunities and impacting on almost every sector of the economy from education to advanced healthcare. Communicating this data is putting increasing pressure on limited bandwidth and resources. This project proposes to change the way we encode data, offering significant potential to improve the efficiency of the communications network and provide a 10-100 fold increase in speed.
Downlinks for Future Earth Observation Satellites: Breaking the Bottlenecks

Current technology can not provide high enough data rates for future earth observation from space. This imagery is critical for dealing with changing environments and making best use of Australia's natural resources. In this project, new transmission techniques for gigabit remote sensing applications will be developed. This research will exploit recent advances in signal processing and coding methods, enabling new space and ground segment products and providing specialised technical training.
